Editors' Note

Sogata is one of the early legends — and true mysteries — of Black design in America. Known in the press by no other name, Sogata was one of the premiere designers of Harlem in the 30s. Hailing from Trinidad and boasting studies in Canada, England and Paris, Sogata reputedly travelled the U.S. looking for work in design but was refused everywhere before coming to Harlem. There he rose to prominence through his work defining the interior aesthetics of such iconic spots as the Savoy Ballroom, the Lenox Lounge and The Joe Louis Restaurant & Bar owned by the legendary heavyweight boxing champion himself, nicknamed the "Brown Bomber." By the late 30s Sogata's success was growing and his continued fame seemed all but assured. In 1937 the New Pittsburgh Courier credited him with single-handedly rebranding Harlem as the "showplace of New York City." In addition to the massive crowds of club-goers the venues he designed attracted, his work reportedly drew the biggest names in Manhattan design uptown in search of inspiration. Then in 1938, at the height of his success, Sogata vanished from the New York design scene and into history. Today he remains a mystery, with some interiors attributed to him only by analysis of their distinctive aesthetic flourishes. Nevertheless, few stars have shone so briefly or so brightly in the story of Black American design as the enigmatic Sogata.
